Ruchservomotor is a company from Belarus, situated in Minsk, that manufactures industrial machines and high-tech scientific technology, uses the optical fiber laser sources of the NTO IRE-POLUS (IPG Photonics) and the work plans of its own production.
The Customer’s main requirement was making a complete re-styling of the CNC machine LaserCut-3015, which is used for a wide range of operations, such as the cutting and welding onto sheet, and the hardening processed seeds of finishes with construction steel and stainless steel.

Concept development

The study of frame or ‘skeleton’ of the machine was our starting point for the first sketches (see first two images). The goal: updating the machine look, in both external structure and protections, in order to create the most precious piece of jewelry in Ruchservomotor’s line and strike the international market with a completely new aesthetics. The concept design considered two setting levels: the first entirely conceived in metal carpentry, and the second one, with a more sophisticated design, including thermoformed plastic pieces.

Style surfaces

While renovating the machine, we did not only improve the aesthetics but also the ergonomics by placing the operator at the center: we thus created protections, openings for access to the machine and maintenance, a movable operating panel that follows the operator. AMV also designed a new remote control to operate the machine from afar. After the concept approval, the style surfaces were developed and, based on that, the final rendered machines were generated.

Engineering

From style to engineering, some technical changes were applied. In particular, we focused on operational spaces related to the console movements (for which an automated system was used), to the front door opening by sliding upwards and partially lifting the roof to limit the obstruction.

Molds

Based on the engineering, aluminum molds were manufactured by fusion from CNC-milled wood models. The aluminum molds were refined in a CNC center as well to get a perfect finishing. These molds were then used to produce the plastic covers of the machine.

Covers

These are the first parts produced for the prototype. First obtained by thermoforming, the pieces are then cut and finished with a 5-axis cutting robot.

Cutting template

Manufacturing of templates for trimming and centering the pieces in order to improve cutting precision and product quality.

Final prototype

For LaserCut-3015 we fabricated thermoformed ABS elements combined with metal carpentry. The ABS fits this type of productions of medium/large size pieces and limited quantities. These are the photos of the final prototype.

Remote control

Remote control prototype

The first prototype was manufactured by sintering.

Remote control mold and pieces

Based on the ergonomic and mechanical evaluations on the first prototype, the mold for production was fabricated (by electroerosion); tests on mold and pieces produced followed.

1. Case study

... is a great way to share the experience and outline the issues essential to consider while working on projects of different kinds and aims. The purpose of the case study is to put the design project into context and to show how it works in a real world situation.

2. Result

... proves that our project perfectly aligns with client's expectations and goals.. Different customers, different needs, different paths but the only aim is a successful product.

3. Experience

...gained through years shows that watching a project form step-by-step is not only engaging, it also makes you more relatable when you show the mistakes you made along the way.
