On 14th June, Russia has opened the doors to millions of tourists from all over the world in style, passionate or not, of the most loved sport on the planet.
But for us at AMV Design the world championships have begun much earlier at the time when Scantronic entrusted us with the design and engineering of their mobile X-ray inspection vehicle, a cutting edge means of prevention, monitoring and scanning of cargoes and vehicles, expressly requested by the Russian authorities to strengthen the security measures of the event.
The collaboration, which began in 2016 with the first design phase, continued with the survey of the Scania chassis at the St. Petersburg site.
The stylistic approach had to reconcile a futuristic aesthetic with the space requirements for the operators and all the sophisticated components that the vehicle is equipped with, and above all to allow the movement and articulation of the scanning unit.
Starting from an existing commercial vehicle there was the further constraint to remain in the dimensions required by road regulations and to allow the vehicle to work in difficult climatic conditions.
AMV Design has therefore conjugated a futuristic idea of the vehicle with the overall harmoniousness.
The additional needs for assembly of the operator cabin and the various macro-groups further conditioned the design which had to adapt to allow access to useful maintenance interventions.
The materials used were chosen based on precise structural needs. Aluminum to guarantee weight reduction, lead to shield the operator's cabin from X-ray radiation. A particular fiberglass processing has been used for all horizontal surfaces to allow resistance to snow loads and trampling.
The engineering phase, started in March 2017, has reached the construction phase already in June, to see the first fully assembled vehicle in St. Petersburg in November.
With a hectic job, which involved other companies and our partners, the last thirteenth vehicle, was completed on 27 April 2018.
ST-2630М is able to scan trucks, containers, cars and other vehicles. The system scans while it is stationary or moving and can even scan occupied vehicles. Detailed, color-coded images help inspectors locate weapons, explosives, drugs, undeclared goods and other contraband goods.
Italy will not be among the participating nations in this world championship but we, at AMV, with some Italian spirit have made it!
